The Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC) is deeply troubled by the escalating threats and violence against journalists in Sindh. The recent brutal murder of senior journalist Mr. Nasrullah Gadani, who succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained in an attack by unidentified assailants near Mirpur Mathelo, Ghotki district, underscores the severe dangers faced by media professionals in the region.
SHRC also calls for the implementation of “The Sindh Protection of Journalists and Other Media Practitioners Act, 2021” which aims to ensure the safety and protection of journalists and strongly urges the Government of Sindh to take immediate and effective actions to implement the provisions of this Act.
Invoking its authority under Section 4(ii) of the Sindh Protection of Human Rights Act, 2011, the SHRC makes the following urgent recommendations:
Ensure Safety and Protection: The Government must rigorously enforce Sections 6 and 7 of the Sindh Protection of Journalists and Other Media Practitioners Act, 2021, to guarantee the safety and protection of journalists and media personnel across Sindh.
Conduct a Fair Enquiry: A thorough and impartial investigation into the murder of Mr. Nasrullah Gadani must be conducted as mandated by Section 4(i) of the Sindh Protection of Human Rights Act, 2011. Justice must be served to Mr. Gadani’s family, and those pursuing the case must be safeguarded against any form of harassment or intimidation.
The SHRC stands in solidarity with journalists and media practitioners in Sindh and reaffirms its commitment to protecting human rights and promoting a free and independent press.
