KARACHI,Sindh Provincial Energy Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah has said that the holding of stakeholders workshop for 500MW floating solar power project on Kenjhar Lake will have far-reaching results. He expressed these views today in a message addressed to the stakeholders on the occasion of a workshop organized by the Energy Department of the Government of Sindh at a local hotel. The Department of Energy, Government of Sindh, in strategic partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), conducted stakeholder engagement workshop in the 500MW Floating Solar Power Project on Kienjar Lake, Thatta, Sindh. The workshop is part of various initiatives aimed at promoting private sector investment. The workshop was held at Movenpick Hotel, Karachi, and was attended by representatives from various departments of the Government of Sindh, including the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Unit, Energy, Irrigation, Investment, Agriculture and Forestry. Additional Secretary Energy Mehboob Syal in his opening remarks highlighted the importance of the project and appreciated the progress towards the province’s renewable energy goals. Ms. Amara Durrani, Assistant Resident Representative of UNDP Pakistan and Mr. Glen Hodes, SDG Finance Specialist of UN DESA participated in the discussion and highlighted the importance of innovative financing methods for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the workshop, representatives of UNDP’s SDG Investment and Climate Finance Facility and Go Energy gave a presentation on the details of the 500 MW floating solar power project. The presentation discussed the technical and financial aspects of the project to address any information gaps and develop a common framework for its feasibility. Go Energy also highlighted the key features of the project. This was followed by an open discussion, moderated by UNDP Pakistan Climate Finance Expert Hameed Rasheed and Sindh Director Alternative Energy Mahfooz Qazi. The participants discussed the project’s potential, challenges and future steps to mobilize private sector investment and promote economic growth in Sindh. Ms.Amara Durrani thanked the participants for their active participation in the workshop and sharing valuable ideas. He reiterated UNDP’s commitment to support Sindh government’s energy projects and implement sustainable development projects through international partnerships. The workshop is an important step in Sindh government’s efforts to attract foreign investment and develop high-impact SDG-aligned projects. This joint approach between the Government of Sindh, UNDP and UN DESA provides a strong foundation for future projects and highlights the importance of innovative solutions to meet climate and energy challenges. In his concluding remarks, Mahfouz Qazi thanked UNDP Pakistan for supporting the feasibility studies of this important project and assured the full cooperation of the Government of Sindh to the project sponsors M/s Go Energy Pvt Ltd.
