Dadu,Awami Tahreek Protest Against Low Wheat Prices and IRSA Act Amendment. Awami Tahreek staged a protest against the low price of wheat and the proposed amendment of the IRSA Act. Demonstrators demanded an increase in the wheat purchasing target set by the Sindh government. The current target stands at 0.9 million tons, which is significantly lower than the previous year's target of 1.4 million tons. The protestors insisted that the purchasing target should be at least 1.7 million tons to support farmers adequately.
They demanded that the government should fix the wheat support price at least five thousand rupees per 40 kg.
A rally, organized by Awami Tahreek and Sindhi Hari Tehreek, was held in Khairpur Nathan Shah on Sunday, April 14, to address the challenges faced by farmers. Led by Kashif Mallah, Central Media Secretary of Awami Tehreek, Advocate Najeebur Rehman Mahesar, Atif Mallah, Hadi Dino Khuharo, Hizballah Khoso and other leaders from Awami Tehreek District Dadu, the rally commenced from the community center and culminated at the press club in KN Shah.
During the rally, Awami Tehreek leaders criticized the government's treatment of farmers, alleging that traders backing Sindh government exploit formers by purchasing wheat at low prices and reselling it to the food department at government fixed rates.
They condemned the government's failure to establish wheat procurement centers and accused it of favoring businessmen and wealthy individuals over small-scale farmers. Additionally, they accused the Sindh government of facilitating wheat smugglers by fixing low purchasing target and depriving growers of gunny bags, thus forcing them to sell their produce at lower prices to smugglers.
Moreover, the leaders decried the mismanagement of irrigation resources, particularly noting the neglect of canals in Khairpur Nathan Shah for years despite being under the legal jurisdiction of the Irrigation Department. They attributed this negligence to corruption within the department and expressed concerns over the lack of progress in repairing canals damaged during the 2022 flood, despite significant funds allocated for their reconstruction.
Awami Tehreek leaders stressed the urgent need to address these issues, highlighting their detrimental impact on the livelihoods of farmers and the broader community.
The amendment to the IRSA Act is viewed as a symbol of Martial Law, reminiscent of the One Unit rules. This ordinance is deemed unconstitutional and is perceived as an assault on the principles outlined in the eighteenth amendment of the Constitution of 1973. Consequently, it is imperative to halt the implementation of this ordinance," they asserted.
