Sukkur, A high-level meeting was held in the conference hall of the Commissioner’s Office Sukkur
to review the security plan for staff deployed at relief camps along the embankments from Sukkur to Guddu Barrage in view of the prevailing flood situation.
The meeting was attended by Secretary Irrigation Sindh, Zarif Iqbal Khero, Commissioner Sukkur Division Abid Saleem Qureshi, Commissioner Larkana Division Tahir Hussain Sangi, DIG Police Sukkur Captain (R) Faisal Abdullah Chachar, Deputy Commissioners and SSPs of Sukkur, Larkana, Shikarpur, Khairpur Mirs, Ghotki and Kashmore-Kandhkot, DIB Branch In-charge, officials of Shahbaz Rangers, the Irrigation Department and other relevant departments.
The participants discussed the formulation of an immediate security plan. Deputy Commissioners and SSPs were directed to coordinate with the Commissioners and DIGs by this evening to finalize a joint strategy. It was emphasized that, in case additional deployment is required, higher authorities must be informed promptly so that reinforcement from other districts can be arranged in time.
Addressing the meeting, Secretary Irrigation Sindh Zarif Iqbal Khero stated that Ronti, Qadirpur, Baiji, Machhka and Danwaro embankments, as well as Faridabad and Ulra Jagir embankments in Khairpur, are highly sensitive points. He further informed that at Naudero Nusrat, Moriya, Aqil Agani, Abad embankment, and the downstream of Moen Jo Daro, along with several other sites, irrigation officers and staff are carrying out 24-hour monitoring. He stressed the need for suitable security arrangements through the establishment of police pickets, in cooperation with police and Rangers, at these locations.
Commissioner Sukkur Division Abid Saleem Qureshi said that the purpose of convening this joint meeting was to finalize all pending security matters without delay. He added that rescue and relief operations are continuing at full pace, while control rooms have been established at the Commissioner’s Office and all Deputy Commissioners’ offices across Sukkur Division for improved coordination. Trained staff from line departments will perform round-the-clock duties at these control rooms. He emphasized that the protection of human lives and livestock remains the top priority, noting that if a flood flow of over 1 million cusecs arrives, a large population could be affected, while a flow of around 700,000 cusecs may impact only scattered areas.
Commissioner Larkana Division Tahir Hussain Sangi assured that if shortages in human resources are identified, requests will be made to higher authorities for additional deployment. DIG Sukkur Captain (R) Faisal Abdullah Chachar directed all SSPs to finalize their security plans today, based on the available police force, for deployment at the identified sensitive points, and to report promptly so it can be determined whether further reinforcement will be required.
During the meeting, officers of the Irrigation Department also highlighted their security needs, concerns, and sensitive sites.
