The federal government has decided to appoint Nihal Hashmi, who hails from Karachi, as the Governor of Sindh. The summary of his appointment has been sent to the President for final approval. Who is Nihal Hashmi, a lawyer by profession?

Nihal Hashmi was born on January 28, 1960, in former East Pakistan. He received his early education there and migrated to Pakistan with his family in 1971. He graduated from Jamia Millia College Karachi and earned his law degree from SM Law College.

In 1992, Nihal Hashmi joined the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and entered practical politics. From 1997 to 1999, he served as Advisor to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Law, Justice, and Human Rights. In 2012, he became President of PML-N Karachi Division. In 2015, he was elected Senator from Punjab on a general seat as a PML-N candidate. In 2016, he assumed responsibilities as General Secretary of PML-N Sindh.

In June 2017, after making a controversial statement, contempt of court proceedings were initiated against him. On February 1, 2018, the Supreme Court sentenced him to one month in prison and barred him from holding public office for five years. He served his sentence in Kot Lakhpat Jail.

Residing in Karachi’s Malir area, Nihal Hashmi has three children—one daughter and two sons. He will be the 35th Governor of Sindh.
