In a recent development, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the de-sealing of factories emitting pollution into the city's environment.
The court, headed by Justice Shahid Kareem, ordered the immediate resealing of these industries, emphasizing the importance of environmental control.
The decision was made during the hearing of petitions related to smog control in Lahore.
Justice Shahid Kareem took a stern stance against the actions of two officers from the environment department who were involved in the de-sealing process.
He asserted that no officer is permitted to override the court's decisions regarding the closure of industries contributing to pollution.
While acknowledging the government's efforts to combat smog, Justice Kareem highlighted the essential role of citizens in cooperating with the authorities to eradicate pollution.
Admonishment for Inadequate Action The court directed its admonishment towards the Director General (DG) of the Environment for what was perceived as insufficient action in addressing the pollution crisis.
Justice Kareem stressed that the court cannot shoulder the sole responsibility and urged the DG to attend the next hearing.
The DG Environment informed the court about the government's short-, medium-, and long-term projects formulated to tackle the environmental crisis in Lahore.
Smog Emergency Measures and Awareness Campaign Earlier this month, the Lahore High Court had instructed authorities to implement a smog emergency in the provincial capital.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) was specifically directed to be actively involved in the smog emergency response. The court further mandated the Commissioner Lahore and other officials to personally visit schools and colleges to raise awareness among students.
The Commissioner reported ongoing smog remediation operations and actions against smoke-emitting vehicles.
