Umar Gul Joins Bangladesh as Bowling Coach Ahead of Pakistan Tour

Former Pakistan fast bowler Umar Gul has officially been appointed as Bangladesh’s bowling coach for their upcoming T20I tour of Pakistan. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has offered Gul a three-month contract, with the possibility of an extension through to the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, depending on performance.

Gul, 42, was a key figure in Pakistan’s 2009 T20 World Cup triumph, famously taking 5 wickets for 6 runs in the semifinal against New Zealand. Since retiring, he has transitioned into coaching, previously working with Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Bangladesh’s current pace attack includes Naheed Rana, Hasan Mahmud, Tanzim Hasan Shakib, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, and Khalid Hasan. Gul’s experience is expected to play a crucial role in their development ahead of the Asia Cup 2025 and T20 World Cup 2026.

The Bangladesh tour to Pakistan, originally planned as a mix of ODIs and T20Is, has now been converted into a five-match T20I series to better align with upcoming white-ball competitions. The series will take place in May, though exact dates and venues are yet to be announced.

Gul expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity, stating, “It’s an exciting offer, and I look forward to it.” While final contract terms are still under discussion, his appointment marks another instance of Pakistan’s cricketing expertise being sought by international teams.

Bangladesh fans will be eager to see how Gul’s guidance shapes their fast-bowling unit in the coming months.
