The Sindh government has resolved to take all-round measures for the development of the newspaper industry in the province. In this context, a consistent and long-term policy will be made through consultation with media owners, editors, journalistic bodies, and other stakeholders concerned to overcome the problems being faced by the newspaper industry and to develop it.
A high-level delegation of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) met with Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon in Karachi. The delegation included CPNE Sindh President Qazi Asad Abid, Secretary General Ghulam Nabi Chandio, and former Secretary General Ijaz ul Haq. Sindh Information Secretary Nadeem-ur-Rehman Memon and Director of Advertisement Muhammad Yousuf Kaboro were also present at the meeting.
The session discussed all significant issues, including the issues faced by the newspaper industry, granting of grants to CPNE, and the alloting of a plot in a handy area of Karachi to the office of the organization. The CPNE delegation asked the Sindh government for help in these respects.
Speaking on the occasion, Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the newspaper industry serves as the eyes and ears of society and plays a vital role in ensuring the continuity of democracy, transparency, and accountability. He stated that providing journalists with dignified employment, protection, insurance, and professional training is a top priority for the Sindh government.
He also added that there are serious steps being taken to save the wages of journalists and their job security.
Sharjeel Inam Memon further added that the Sindh government stands with the journalism fraternity and will make sure that media organizations are independent and resilient. He emphasized that organizations like CPNE play a vital role in promoting press freedom, and their issues will be addressed on a priority basis.
He reiterated the commitment that the Sindh government’s forthcoming policy will not only strengthen newspaper institutions but also ensure the welfare of journalists.
