Dawn News Reporter Khawar Hussain’s Death: Sindh Police Investigation Concludes Suicide, Family’s Cooperation Urged

Sindh Police’s investigative committee has released an 8-page report concluding that senior journalist Khawar Hussain died by suicide. The report is based on CCTV footage from Karachi to Sanghar, a detailed examination of the crime scene, eyewitness interviews, and video evidence showing Khawar entering the hotel parking lot up to the moment of his death. Postmortem and forensic reports were also thoroughly reviewed.
The report states that Khawar Hussain’s car remained parked outside a restaurant for two hours, during which no one approached him or interacted with his vehicle. Medical and postmortem findings also support the conclusion of suicide. His death occurred between 9:58 PM and 10:35 PM on Saturday, August 16.
The possibility of murder or accidental gunfire has been ruled out. The report emphasizes that understanding the reasons behind Khawar Hussain’s suicide requires cooperation from his family.
Some journalists and close acquaintances revealed off the record that Khawar was experiencing serious marital issues, which may require further investigation. However, this aspect was not immediately pursued out of respect for the grieving family.
The committee was led by Additional IG Azad Khan, with members DIG Irfan Baloch and SSP Abid Baloch.
On August 21, a preliminary report from Khawar Hussain’s second postmortem was also released, confirming that the fatal gunshot to his head was a contact shot fired from extremely close range. The report, signed by police surgeon Dr. Waseem Khan, Professor Dr. Waheed Ali, and Additional Police Surgeon Dr. Muhammad Adeel Rajput, stated that the bullet caused severe damage to both sides of the skull and brain—enough to cause instant death.
Earlier, on August 18, Dr. Waseem from Hyderabad Civil Hospital confirmed that no signs of torture or resistance were found during the second postmortem.
On the other hand, Khawar Hussain’s brother Ejaz Hussain told the media that his brother was cheerful and resilient, and he did not believe Khawar could have taken his own life. He said Khawar never mentioned any distress or conflict.
Khawar Hussain’s body was found in his car outside a hotel in Sanghar on the night of August 16, with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
