CM calls for maintaining altered ratio of doctors, nurses, medical technicians KARACHI Caretaker Sindh Chief Minister Justice (R ) Maqbool Baqar has said that the challenge in Pakistan is the altered ratio of doctors and paramedics, where we are producing more doctors instead of nurses, midwives, LHVs and medical technicians.
“I am glad that today at least we have taken a step to overcome this challenge by launching Skill Lab for Pediatric & Neonatal Care Technician Course here at College of Nursing, Kohi Goth, Malir.”
The inauguration program was attended by Prof. Tipu Sultan, Chairman Atia & Zafar Foundation and Charitable Trust, Dr Shershah Syed, Chief of the Field office of UNICEF, Sindh Mr Prem Bahadur.

“This hospital has been tending to the most deserving people and its services are being acknowledged not only in Pakistan but all over the world,” he said and added that it was a matter of satisfaction to witness the marvellous work everybody, from doctors to essential staff, was doing in the hospital.Justice Baqar said that it was a great concern to know that Pakistan has one of the highest child mortality in the world in which newborn mortality contributes significantly.
“One in every 14 Pakistani children does not survive to his fifth birthday,” he deplored and added that his worries further increased when he learnt that many of these lives could be saved with appropriate and timely preventive and curative measures.
He said that Pakistan was producing more doctors than nurses, midwives, LHVs and medical technicians. The establishment of the College of Nursing and the introduction of the Skill Lab for Pediatric & Neonatal Care Technician Course is a step forward to overcoming the shortfall.
”This institution will produce quality Pediatrics and Neonatal technicians which will definitely contribute to the reduction of child and newborn mortality,” he hoped. Justice Baqar thanked UNICEF, for the support to the Department of Health to improve the quality of health facilities, for the establishment of this Skill lab and initiation of the Technician course, in particular. He added that the Sindh government was fully committed and determined to address the challenges in the field of health care.
Speaking on the occasion Prof Tipu Sultan said that the hospital was providing free of cost treatment to women and children. He added that every month on average 600 deliveries were carried out in the hospital
.Dr Tipu Sultan said that the nurses and other technical courses were being imparted free of cost. The CM visited different classes and interacted with the under training nurses, and technicians.
