Overseas Sindhi Leadership Warns Against Any Division of Sindh, Calls for Protection of Constitutional Rights
KARACHI / WASHINGTON: Ashfaq Memon, former General Secretary of the Sindhi Association of North America (SANA), representing the North American Sindhi diaspora, held a press conference expressing deep concern over reported plans to alter Sindh’s status or division. Speaking on behalf of overseas Sindhis, Memon declared that any unilateral or unconstitutional attempt to fragment Sindh's geographical identity, alter its administrative structure, or compromise its constitutional rights would be met with strong opposition.
Highlighting Sindh’s historical heritage, Memon emphasized that Sindh is the heir to the 5,000-year-old Indus Valley Civilization and home to iconic peace figures such as Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, Sachal Sarmast, and Lal Shahbaz Qalandar. He stated that the people of Sindh hold an unwavering attachment to every inch of their motherland and warned that any attempt to divide it would be considered a direct attack on their identity and dignity.
The address raised critical issues affecting the province, including:
- Resource Distribution: Expressing concern over the fair allocation of Sindh's natural resources, including water, gas, oil, and coal.
- Indus River & Canal Projects: Raising serious objections to projects like the Jalalpur Canal and demanding a fair, environmentally sustainable distribution of Indus waters to protect lower Sindh.
- Disappearances & Injustice: Demanding the safe recovery of missing individuals, citing the case of Priya Kumari, and urging state resources to be deployed for justice.
- Merit in Employment: Supporting thousands of educated youth protesting outside the Sindh Public Service Commission for transparent, merit-based recruitment and constitutional rights.
Concluding the press conference, Memon urged the Government of Pakistan, the Government of Sindh, and all constitutional institutions to address these grievances through dialogue and judicial principles. He reiterated that the diaspora remains committed to peaceful, constitutional advocacy and international public opinion to defend Sindh’s rights and unity.
