Paving the Way for Climate Resilience: Team Europe's Green Jobs Creation Initiative in Punjab In a significant stride towards sustainable development, the European Union (EU) and the Agence Française de Développement (AfD) have joined forces in a new climate initiative under the Team Europe Initiative 'Building Back Better through Green Jobs Creation.' This collaborative effort, supported by Germany, France, and Italy, focuses on addressing urgent water and sanitation challenges in the urban centers of Punjab, particularly Faisalabad and Lahore. The agreement, named 'Punjab Urban Water and Wastewater Governance and Services Improvement,' is a six-year endeavor that allocates €179 million to tackle pressing water and sanitation service delivery challenges while enhancing climate resilience. This initiative combines grant support from the EU and a soft loan from the AfD. The signing ceremony, attended by key representatives including EU Ambassador Dr. Riina Kionka and Deputy Director AfD Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Asia, Julie Marsaudon, highlights the commitment of the Team Europe partners to support Pakistan's green inclusive growth. EU's Commitment to Climate Resilience and Green Inclusive Growth EU Ambassador Dr. Riina Kionka, acknowledging Punjab's pivotal economic role, emphasized the persistent water and sanitation challenges in the region. She reaffirmed the EU's commitment to aiding Pakistan in building resilience to climate change and supporting green inclusive growth. The EU's significant role as a leading contributor to international climate finance was underscored, with Kionka highlighting the EU's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to global public financing. France's Strategic Cooperation on Climate Change A representative of the French Ambassador highlighted France's commitment to the fight against climate change as a top priority. With 97% of AFD financing benefiting the climate, the partnership with the EU on water and sanitation aligns with France's goal of mobilizing expertise for climate-resilient solutions in these sectors. This joint effort aims to install new water supply infrastructure, increase water treatment capacity, and improve urban water governance, ultimately benefiting 400,000 individuals and contributing to sustainable development in Faisalabad and Lahore.
