In a compelling address at the Rotary International District 3271's two-day Climate Change Conference and Awards -2023, President Dr. Arif Alvi underscored the imperative need for a profound change in attitudes to effectively combat the escalating impacts of climate change. Emphasizing the collective responsibility, he urged individuals to actively engage in countering the detrimental effects of climate change, citing the unfortunate trend of trees being cut down and the reluctance to plant new ones.
President Alvi remarked that climate change is a global concern, and every citizen must recognize their role in addressing it. The President commended Pakistan's efforts in initiating the 10 billion tsunami program as a proactive measure to safeguard the environment. He shared insights from his visits to schools, where he actively participated in tree-planting initiatives with schoolchildren, fostering awareness about the dire consequences of climate change.
Revolutionizing Urban Greenery: President's Call for Action
Drawing attention to the environmental challenges faced by urban dwellers, President Alvi advised residents of multi-floor high-rises, particularly in Karachi, to cultivate saplings in clay pots and grow vegetables in their galleries. This, he believes, can contribute significantly to creating a healthier planet and reducing the adverse impacts of climate change, especially considering the alarming rate of 500 million gallons of contaminated water being discharged into the sea daily.
In his comprehensive discourse, the President emphasized the need for water and electricity conservation while advocating for the adoption of alternative energy sources, particularly solar systems, to alleviate the strain on the environment.
Educational and Healthcare Imperatives: President Alvi's Vision
Addressing broader societal issues, President Alvi highlighted the critical challenges in education, healthcare, and technology. He expressed concern about the 20.8 million out-of-school children in the country and proposed leveraging technology, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), to bridge the educational gap. The President also raised awareness about the shortage of nurses, the high failure rate in drug rehabilitation, and the escalating issue of mental stress in households.
