Awami Tehreek vehemently opposes the
unconstitutional, illegal, and immoral appointment of the new IRSA Chairman.
The recent enactment of the IRSA Act Amendment Ordinance by the federal
government poses a grave threat to the survival of the Indus River. Prime
Minister Shehbaz Sharif disregarded the constitutional norms. The appointment
of pro-dam person Zafar Mahmood is a threat to the people of Sindh. Newly
appointed IRSA Chairman Zafar Mahmood is as controversial as IRSA amendment
act. This illegal appointment of the IRSA Chairman not only undermines our
constitution but also violates federal democratic principles.
On World Rivers Day, we urgently call
for measures to protect the Indus River. The rampant construction of dams has
pushed the Indus to the brink of extinction, making it one of the world's dead
rivers.
In a joint statement, leaders
including Lal Jarwar, Central President of Awami Tehreek, Hoorunisa Palijo,
Rasool Bux Khaskheli, Advocate Raheel Bhutto, and Dayal Sehrai said that it
looks like that so called federal government, actually which is the protector
of the interests of upper class of Punjab want to destroy the agriculture
economy of Sindh through snatching its due water rights through this
unconstitutional appointment. Recent amendments in the IRSA act authorize the
chairman of IRSA to decide unilaterally and the grievance of shortage of water
by members of IRSA could be ignored by the chairman. PML-N, PPP, and MQM have
ruled Pakistan for several years and these leaders are responsible for the
economic, social, political, and environmental collapse of Pakistan. Sindh is
facing an acute shortage of not only for agricultural use but drinking
purposes. Leaders of Awami Tahreek proposed that the Government of Sindh
through CCI should take up the matter of appointment of IRSA chairman,
otherwise, the people of Sindh will be legitimate to understand that PPP led
Sindh Govt has accepted this economic genocide of the people of Sindh.
In statement, leaders condemned the
collaboration between the federal government and the Pakistan Peoples Party,
which has led to the near destruction of the Indus River. In the name of the
so-called federal government, Punjab's involvement in embezzlement further
compounds the threat to Sindh's livelihoods.
Recognizing the crucial role of the
Indus River in sustaining life and preserving its heritage, we call for
immediate legislative action to protect it.
