Karachi,In a groundbreaking session convened by the Climate Action Center Karachi, a diverse assembly of journalists from print, electronic, and web media gathered to ignite a transformative dialogue on climate journalism in Pakistan. The event, which saw participation of 30 journalists from English, Urdu, and Sindhi media professionals, became a platform for sharing insights and voicing concerns over the accessibility of official data and research on local environmental challenges. The participants unanimously agreed that environmental and climate change topics are often sidelined, relegated to journalists less engaged in prominent beats. The lack of specialized training facilities was identified as a significant barrier, preventing reporters from excelling in climate journalism and leading to an overreliance on press releases and events for content. The consensus among the media professionals was clear: there is an urgent need for targeted training programs to equip both electronic and print journalists with the skills necessary to cover climate change issues effectively. Yasir Husain, Director of Climate Action Center, emphasized the pivotal role of media in catalyzing climate action and promoting sustainable solutions tailored for Pakistan. He invited fossil energy producers to switch to renewable energy production and face up to the inevitable transition to clean and equitable energy. Husain highlighted the stark choice facing the nation: continue to bear the high costs of fossil fuel-generated electricity or advocate for affordable, clean energy solutions. He urged the media to convey this critical message, emphasizing the dire consequences of maintaining the status quo. In a move to elevate climate reporting to the forefront of mainstream media, Husain proposed the creation of a dedicated platform for climate journalists. This initiative aims to foster a collaborative environment for sharing knowledge and best practices. The meeting concluded with a resolution for interested journalists to convene weekly at the Climate Action Center, furthering the development of this specialized platform. The event also coincided with an Eid Milan Party, offering high tea to guests in celebration of the festive occasion.
