"IDSP Pakistan Conducts Climate Change and Water Management Session with Farmers in Dera Murad Jamali"
IDSP Pakistan, led by Ms. Mamoona Nabi, conducted a session on climate change and water management with small farmers in Dera Murad Jamali. Currently facing morning and evening smog, farmers reported that their crops' leaves dried up after the 2022 floods and extreme temperatures, a condition locally known as "Panvery." The farmers, reliant on canal (Nehry) water due to lack of tubewells or advanced irrigation systems, initially used chemical fertilizers. With IDSP's support, they began using organic fertilizers, although their land needs time to adapt. The groundwater level is about 25 feet deep, and while the Balochistan government has introduced various schemes, farmers lack information and affordability.
They face a severe water shortage for three months when canal water runs out and have requested government support to build ponds (talabs) and receive their share of government schemes to improve water management and sustain agriculture.
