A Stronger Push to Eradicate Polio
Karachi, Sindh The Sindh province is intensifying its preparedness for the upcoming December Immunization Drive as part of its sustained campaign to detect and interrupt poliovirus transmission early.
The latest efforts build on significant progress, though the threat remains: Sindh reported 23 cases in 2024 and 9 in 2025, with the last case detected in August 2025 (Badin)
Situation Overview: Surveillance remains the cornerstone of the strategy. Key early poliovirus detection through sewage and acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance is actively helping to interrupt transmission before it can cause paralysis.
Strategic Focus: Readiness and Reach
The campaign’s strategic focus is multi-pronged, emphasizing both the readiness of the workforce and community participation:
Strengthening pre-campaign planning and frontline worker readiness.
Supporting and motivating Frontline Workers (FLWs) to ensure full household reach.
Encouraging community and school participation in immunization efforts.
Highlighting positive stories of polio workers who are driving progress.
Ensuring consistent, accurate information through coordinated communication.
The Next National Immunization Days (NIDs
The province is mobilizing for its next round of National Immunization Days (NIDs), set to run from 15–21 December
Objective:Achieve high-quality coverage across all districts to strengthen immunity and block transmission.
Target:10.6 million children under the age of five years.
Coverage:1,345 Union Councils (UCs)** across 30 districts
Workforce: Over 80,000 FLWs, supported by 21,000+ Law Enforcement Agency (LEA) personnel and 400 lady police constables.
Surveillance and Genetic Analysis
Polio remains present in certain high-risk locations. However, genetic analysis continues to provide critical insight into transmission routes, allowing authorities to deploy precise, targeted interventions and vaccination drives.
