Hyderabad The central leadership of Awami Tehreek, including President Advocate Vasand Thari, Senior Vice President Noor Ahmed Katiar, and General Secretary Advocate Sajid Hussain Mahesar, issued a statement declaring the PECA Act Amendment Bill as a testament to undemocratic forces' control over Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah's Pakistan.
They claimed that the establishment has turned Jinnah's Pakistan into a prison through oppressive laws. The legislation being passed in the assembly contradicts the principles of the country's founder, with an undeclared martial law already in effect. The amendment to the PECA Act is tantamount to a formal declaration of martial law.
The PECA Act Amendment Bill and similar black laws expose the true face of the so-called democratic government. They further stated that by attacking freedom of expression, the dignity of the national constitution has been violated. The PECA Act stands in direct violation of Pakistan's Constitution, specifically Article 19 of the 1973 Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression.
Awami Tehreek leaders also highlighted that unconstitutional legislation has undermined the Constitution, as undemocratic forces in every era have disrespected and disregarded it. Black laws such as the PECA Act reflect the worst form of martial law.
They accused the PML-N of completely becoming a subordinate wing of undemocratic forces in its pursuit of power, while urging the PPP to stop its pretense of supporting democracy. The PPP government, they claimed, is equally complicit with the PML-N in passing oppressive laws. They called on Shehbaz Sharif, Asif Ali Zardari, and Bilawal Bhutto to stop deceiving the public.
The leaders described the PECA Act Amendment Bill as a direct attack on media freedom and public opinion. They also alleged that on one hand, millions of acres of land, the Indus River, and the resources of oppressed nations are being seized through corporate farming, while on the other, new black laws are being introduced daily to suppress the voice of the people.
Awami Tehreek leaders vowed that the oppressed people of the country would continue their peaceful political struggle and would never accept such anti-people and unconstitutional laws imposed by undemocratic forces.
