Human Rights Lawyer Iman Mazari Sentenced to 10 Years as Tweets Case Sparks Outcry

An Islamabad local court has sentenced human rights lawyer Iman Mazari—who has been pursuing cases related to enforced disappearances—and her husband Hadi Ali Chatha to a total of 17 years of rigorous imprisonment each under different sections in a controversial tweets case.
According to the court’s verdict, both have been sentenced to five years each under Section 9 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), ten years each under Section 10 of PECA, and two years under Section 26-A of PECA.
Under these provisions, a total fine of 9 million rupees has also been imposed on Iman Mazari and Hadi Ali Chatha.
However, all sentences will run concurrently, and both will have to serve ten years of imprisonment.
