Karachi Faces Water Supply Suspension Amid Heatwave
Karachi residents, already struggling with power outages during the intense heat, will now face a temporary disruption in water supply. From April 25, several areas of the city will be without water for two days.
According to the Water Corporation, supply will be suspended for 48 hours due to repair work on Line No. 5 at the Dhabeji pumping station, which has completed its service life. The project is being carried out with the support of the World Bank. Dhabeji station normally provides around 400 million gallons of water daily to Karachi, but during the repairs, the city will face a shortfall of more than 250 million gallons.
The suspension will affect multiple areas including North Karachi, Surjani Town, Scheme 33, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Saddar, Sindhi Muslim Society, and Mehmoodabad. Three of the city’s seven hydrants — NEPA, Safora, and Sakhi Hasan — will also remain closed, impacting tanker services.
Karachi requires approximately 1,200 million gallons of water daily, but only 650 million gallons are currently available. The repair work is expected to widen this gap, intensifying the city’s existing water crisis.
