World Fisheries Day is Celebrated on the Theme of "Conservation Through Collaboration: Uniting to Develop Fishing Communities”

Karachi, - In commemoration of World Fisheries Day, the National Institute of Maritime Affairs hosted a vibrant and informative event centered around the theme, "Conservation Through Collaboration: Uniting to Develop Fishing Communities." Honorable Chief Minister Sindh, Mr. Justice (Retd) Maqbool Baqar graced the occasion as Chief Guest. The occasion brought together stakeholders, experts, researchers, academics, and fishing communities to discuss sustainable practices, community development, and the crucial role of collaboration in preserving our fish resources and supporting fishing communities.
The event held at Al Beruni Auditorium, Bahria University Karachi, commenced with a welcome note of Cdre (Retd.) Ali Abbas SI (M) Director National Institute of Maritime Affairs and Vice Admiral (Retd.) Ahmed Saeed HI(M) Director General National Institute of Maritime Affairs. It featured a series of engaging activities, keynote speakers, discussions, and initiatives aimed at promoting responsible fisheries management and fostering cooperation amongst various entities involved in the fishing industry.
The Speakers Mr. Moazzam Khan, Dr. Ahmed Riyaaz Jauharee (from Maldives), Ms. Songul Jamal, Dr. Aslam Buzdar, Mr. Altaf Shaikh, and the Participants for the short talk Mr. Dr. Ali Muhammad Mastoi and Mr. Fawad Soomro, engaged in the seminar were renowned experts in the field of fisheries management. The seminar provided valuable insights into sustainable fishing practices, conservation strategies, and the critical need for community development. In addition, several distinguished discussants and panelists from environmental organizations, government bodies, and local fishing communities shared their perspectives on the theme. Discussions delved into the challenges faced by fishing communities and explored collaborative solutions for long-term sustainability.
A key focus of the event was practically reaching out to the local fishing communities. Accordingly, representatives from the National Institute of Maritime Affairs, Karachi conducted outreach programs, providing information on the importance of sustainable fishing practices, environmental conservation, available resources and strategies to support community development.
The seminar was concluded by the address of Honorable Chief Minister Sindh, Mr. Justice (Retd) Maqbool Baqar, and a note of thanks was presented by Vice Admiral (Retd.) Ahmed Saeed HI(M), the Director General National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA).
Expressed gratitude to the Chief Guest, speakers, and participants for their active involvement in making the celebration of World Fisheries Day 2023 a resounding success. It was concluded that through collaborative efforts, all the stakeholders and all the concerned agencies should drive positive change in the fishing industry, ensuring a sustainable future for both marine ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.
