Awami Tehreek Holds Massive Rally in Jhampeer, Announces Protests at Key Indus River Sites on March 14 to Commemorate International Day to Save Rivers

Jhamper In a powerful show of resistance, Awami Tehreek organized a massive protest rally in Jhamper on monday, condemning corporate farming and the construction of six new canals, which they described as an assault on Sindh’s water resources and the rights of its people. Awami Tehreek mobilized thousands in a rally today, vowing to stage protests at key Indus River sites on March 14 to commemorate the International Day to Save Rivers.The rally, which began at Jhamper Bypass and culminated in Jhamper city, was led by Advocate Vasand Thari, Central President of Awami Tehreek, alongside key leaders including Noor Ahmed Katiar, Abdul Qadir Ranto, Razzaque Chandio, Mittha Khan Lashari, Shah Muhammad Chang, Bilawal Lashari, Ghulam Ali Zaor, Anwar Palari, Amanullah Birohi, Saddam Chang, and others.
Advocate Vasand Thari addressed the crowd, stating: “Sindh’s water is being unjustly diverted to corporate farming entities, stripping local communities of their fundamental rights. We will neither tolerate this robbery of the Indus River nor accept the poisoning of our waters with industrial waste.”
Coordinated Protests Announced for March 14
To mark the International Day to Save Rivers on March 14, Awami Tehreek and Sindhiani Tehreek will hold synchronized protests at strategic locations along the Indus River, including: Labe-e-Mehran Sukkur, Khairpur-Larkana Bridge, Dadu-Moro pul (Bridge), Al-Manzar Jamshoro and the Dolhya Darya Khan Bridge Thatta-Sujawal.
Protesters will offer floral tributes to the Indus River as a symbol of reverence and demand an end to its exploitation.
Awami Tehreek leaders vehemently criticized WAPDA for releasing contaminated water from other provinces into Hamal Lake, calling it a breach of international law. Noor Ahmed Katiar, Senior Vice President, said that “Manchar Lake has already been devastated by pollution. Now, instead of restoring it, the federal government seeks to poison Hamal Lake. They are converting Sindh’s fertile lands into sewers by stealing freshwater—a policy akin to Hitler’s oppression and a genocide of the Sindhi people.”
The rally condemned large-scale land acquisitions under corporate farming projects, and resident projects icluding Zulfiqarabad, Bahria Town, Commander City, Wind Power Project, DHA city and others.
Leaders accused these projects of displacing local communities and handing millions of acres to private corporations, rendering Sindhis “homeless in their homeland.”
Awami Tehreek also lambasted the PPP-led Sindh government for its complicity in Punjab’s exploitation of Sindh’s water resources.
The protest leaders pointed out that Marium Nawaz continues to launch Green Pakistan projects, yet the Sindh government has failed to even pass a condemnatory resolution against the theft of its water.
They criticized Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah for failing to pass resolutions against water theft and accused him of weakening Sindhi resistance. “Murad Ali Shah’s statements claiming that ‘no canals will be built’ are simply tactics to weaken Sindhi resistance. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has turned Murad Ali Shah into an agent of Maryam Nawaz’s government,” they said
