Surprisingly, this mental health disorder posed a more severe risk factor compared to other evaluated illnesses. Dr. Robert Feder, a retired psychiatrist, emphasized the escalating threat, stating, “Until climate change gets under control, things are only going to get worse unfortunately.”

Researchers are uncovering a troubling link between rising temperatures and a surge in mental health issues.


Beyond the immediate impact of heatwaves, prolonged exposure to air pollution, exacerbated by climate-related events like wildfires, is contributing to increased anxiety and suicide attempts. Delving into the neurological aspects, experts point to the anterior hypothalamus as a critical region responsible for regulating body temperature. Individuals with mental health disorders, particularly schizophrenia, exhibit impaired neurotransmission in this area.


The intricate relationship between brain chemicals like dopamine and serotonin, often imbalanced in mental health patients, further complicates the body's ability to control temperature.
As Dr. Joshua Wortzel explains, medications, including antipsychotics, can impact serotonin levels and exacerbate the risk. Lifestyle choices crucial for managing mental health, such as sleep, may also be compromised by the changing climate.
