Unveiling the
Massive Carbon Footprint of Global Food Systems: Tackling the Hidden Culprit
In the colossal task of
feeding the world, a startling reality lurks beneath the surface—a third of
global greenhouse gas emissions stem from the efforts to nourish our planet.
Despite the enormity of the environmental impact associated with food production,
action has been disappointingly scarce. The imminent U.N. climate conference in
Dubai marks a pivotal moment as it dedicates an entire day to address the
urgent need to reduce the climate impact of our global food systems. Advocacy
groups are fervently urging nations to devise concrete solutions to confront
this critical issue head-on. Here, we delve into a comprehensive exploration of
the various sources of emissions from the food and agriculture sector.
HOW MUCH DOES OUR FOOD EMIT?
According to the United
Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), global food systems were
accountable for a staggering 17 billion metric tonnes of carbon dioxide
equivalent in 2019. This figure represents a significant 31% of human-made
greenhouse gas emissions. The scope of these emissions spans farming and land
use, crop and livestock production, household consumption, and waste.
Cumulatively, these sectors contributed to 21% of the world’s carbon dioxide,
53% of methane, and a whopping 78% of nitrous oxide emissions on a global
scale.
LIVESTOCK
Among the major
contributors to emissions is livestock, which generates approximately 14.5% of
all anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Cattle, in particular, contribute a
substantial 65% of these emissions, primarily through the release of methane
during digestion. Livestock emissions also emanate from the production and
processing of animal feed, involving activities such as land tillage that
release stored carbon into the soil.
LAND USE
The activities
supporting agriculture, such as deforestation and peatland degradation,
annually generate 3.5 billion metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent, according to
FAO. Notably, deforestation, especially in countries like Brazil, the largest
exporter of beef and soybeans, is responsible for nearly 80% of emissions from
food production. Peatlands, storing twice as much carbon as the world's
forests, face drainage or burning for agriculture, contributing to about 5% of
anthropogenic emissions.
FOOD WASTE
Approximately one-third
of global food production ends up wasted, with 13% lost between harvest and
retail stages and 17% in households, food service, and retail sectors,
according to the U.N. This wastage, inclusive of the energy used in production
and transport, accounts for half of all global food system emissions. A
significant portion of these emissions arises from the methane produced when
food rots in landfills, making up 25% of municipal solid waste emissions in
U.S. landfills.
