Hyderabad In a joint press statement, Advocate Vasan Thari, Central President of Awami Tehreek; Advocate Sajid Hussain Mahesar, Central General Secretary; Dr. Rasool Bux Khaskheli, Advocate Raheel Bhutto, and Noor Nabi Palijo said that despite forecasts of heavy rains and flooding, the Sindh government took no preventive measures. The funds allocated for the cleaning of canals and watercourses have been embezzled by feudal lords of the Pakistan Peoples Party. Huge corruption was committed in the repair of embankments, making them dangerously weak.
They further stated that both NDMA and PDMA have geared up to misappropriate the relief funds meant for the flood-affected people. Despite receiving billions in funds, NDMA has not provided even a single rupee in aid to the victims.
The leaders said that neither the federal nor the provincial governments have any disaster management plans in place. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the body meant to deal with such emergencies, is entirely staffed with part-time workers, while full-time professionals are crucial for effective disaster management. Officials from unrelated departments have been inducted into the NDMA, rendering the institution paralyzed. NDMA has become a hub of corruption.
