GWADAR EMERGES AS STRATEGIC OPPORTUNITY AMID CHABAHAR SANCTIONS - SARDAR SHOUKAT POPALZAI, PRESIDENT, BALOCHISTAN ECONOMIC FORUM:
The recent decision by the United States to reimpose sanctions on India’s Chabahar Port project in Iran must be seen in its true strategic context. It is not merely an Iran-focused policy tool but a carefully calculated geopolitical move designed to reshape regional alignments and restrict India’s ability to access Central Asia and Eurasia through Iran.
Chabahar has long been projected as India’s gateway to Afghanistan and Central Asia, bypassing Pakistan and counterbalancing China’s growing presence in Gwadar. By revoking the waiver that allowed Indian operations at Chabahar, Washington has effectively dismantled this strategic pathway. It is a clear signal that the US now views Pakistan’s role as more crucial in its West Asian and Afghan policy recalibration, as evidenced by renewed economic-political engagements and high-level contacts with Pakistan’s leadership.
For Pakistan, this evolving scenario presents both a challenge and an unprecedented opportunity. With Chabahar constrained, Gwadar naturally emerges as the most viable hub for regional connectivity and trade, particularly for Central Asian and Eurasian markets. The linkage of Gwadar with CPEC and its integration into China’s Belt and Road Initiative provides Pakistan with the chance to position itself at the center of new trade corridors that serve not just South Asia, but the wider Eurasian region.
It is, therefore, imperative that Pakistan seizes this moment decisively. The government must immediately accelerate the operationalisation of Gwadar Port, prioritise completion of associated infrastructure, and fast-track policies that make Gwadar a reliable and attractive alternative for regional and global partners.
In an era where global energy and trade routes are being redrawn, Balochistan, through Gwadar, can deliver immense strategic and economic dividends to Pakistan and beyond. We must ensure that Gwadar does not remain a project of promises but becomes a living reality of prosperity, investment, and connectivity. -
