On World Marine Mammals Day, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar emphasized the importance of protecting marine life.
He warned that overfishing and pollution pose serious threats to marine ecosystems. The minister noted that 27 species of whales and dolphins have been recorded in Pakistan’s territorial waters.
He highlighted the presence of large dolphin pods in Gwadar West Bay as a positive sign, stating that dolphins indicate a healthy marine ecosystem. Sustainable fishing practices are essential for the protection of marine mammals, he added.
The minister stressed the need for effective measures to protect whales in the Arabian Sea and said that raising awareness among fishermen can play a key role in saving marine life.
He further emphasized that conserving marine biodiversity is crucial for Pakistan’s national economy. Junaid Anwar also mentioned that Pakistan is rapidly implementing programs for traffic data digitalization and transparency.
